
The hopper is the single most important block for automation in Minecraft. It moves items on its own, from a mob farm’s collection point into a chest, from a furnace’s output into storage, or between containers in a sorting system. If you have ever wanted a farm that fills a chest while you are away, the hopper is how. It costs five iron and a chest, and the only tricky part is pointing it the right way.

How to Craft a Hopper

The recipe is a V (or U) shape:
- Place a chest in the top-center slot of the crafting table.
- Put iron ingots in the two slots either side of the chest, and the three slots along the bottom-center V. That is 5 iron ingots total.
- You get 1 hopper.
Break a hopper with a pickaxe or it drops nothing. On Java Edition a hopper cannot be pushed by a piston, so it stays where you put it.
Aiming a Hopper: The Step Everyone Gets Wrong
A hopper has a spout (the narrow part with the dark bottom), and it pushes items out of that spout into whatever container it points at. It can point down or sideways, and getting the direction right is the whole game:
- To point it into a container (a chest, furnace, another hopper), crouch/sneak and then place the hopper directly onto that container. Without crouching you would just open the container instead of placing.

- Looking up at a block when you place a hopper makes it face down.
- Once placed, a hopper cannot be re-aimed. If you point it wrong, break it and place it again.
Get in the habit of thinking “spout points at the destination,” and hoppers stop being confusing.
How a Hopper Moves Items

A hopper does three jobs at once:
- Collects item entities that land in the space directly above it, checking every game tick (0.05 seconds). If a solid block sits on top, it cannot collect.
- Pulls items out of a container directly above it (a chest, furnace, or another hopper).
- Pushes one item at a time into the container its spout points at.
After each push or pull, a hopper waits a 0.4-second cooldown, which works out to about 2.5 items per second. Collecting dropped items does not use that cooldown, so hoppers grab loose items faster than they move items between chests. This is why a row of three or more hoppers, a hopper pipe, is the standard way to carry items across a build.
How to Turn a Hopper Off (Locking)
Hoppers work backwards from most redstone: giving one a redstone signal locks it (turns it off), and removing the signal lets it run again. Any power source works, a lever, a redstone torch, a block of redstone, or dust running into the hopper or into a solid block beside it.
This is essential for automation. A classic example is an auto-brewer: a hopper under the brewing stand would keep yanking your bottles out before they finish, so you lock that bottom hopper with redstone until the potion is done. It is also how item sorters decide what goes where.
What Hoppers Can (and Can’t) Connect To
Hoppers work with almost every container: chests, trapped chests, barrels, furnaces, blast furnaces, smokers, dispensers, droppers, brewing stands, composters, and shulker boxes. A few things are worth knowing:
- Furnaces: a hopper on top feeds the smelt slot, one on the side feeds fuel, and one underneath pulls the finished output (the XP stays in the furnace until you collect an item yourself).

- Trapped chests emit a signal when opened, so opening one locks any hopper touching it, which can pause a system unexpectedly.
- Shulker boxes work like containers, but a hopper will not stuff a shulker box inside another shulker box.
- Ender chests do not connect to hoppers at all.
