Instead of throwing away all those extra seeds, crops, and saplings, you feed them into a composter and it produces bone meal you can use to grow more crops. It is one of the best quality-of-life blocks for any farmer, and it doubles as a villager job block.

The Recipe
At a crafting table, arrange 7 wooden slabs in a U shape:
- Bottom row: slab, slab, slab
- Left and right columns: a slab in the middle and top of each side
- Center and top-middle: empty
Any wood type works, and you can even mix them. If you need slabs, three wooden planks in a row make 6 slabs, so a couple of logs’ worth of planks is plenty.
How Composting Works
Once placed, right-click the composter while holding a compostable item (crops, seeds, flowers, most plant and plant-based food). Each item you add has a random chance to raise the compost level. The composter fills through 7 levels; when the seventh fills, it turns over and drops 1 bone meal, ready to pick up.
The catch is that different items have very different odds of adding a level, so what you feed it matters a lot.
Which Items Fill It Fastest
Items are grouped by their chance to add a compost level. Higher percentage means fewer items per bone meal:
- ~30% (low): seeds, saplings, leaves, grass, kelp, sweet berries. Cheap and plentiful, but slow.
- ~50% (medium): most crops and flowers, wheat, carrots, potatoes, melon and pumpkin blocks, and poppies.
- ~85% (high): bread, cookies, baked potatoes, hay bales, and mushroom blocks.
- 100%: cakes and pumpkin pies (every one adds a level, but they are expensive to craft).
For a background bone meal supply, the sweet spot is mid-tier stuff you have tons of, like spare crops and poppies from an iron farm. One thing to know: bamboo is not compostable, even though it is a plant.
Automating a Composter
You do not have to feed it by hand. A simple automatic composter uses two hoppers:
- Place a hopper on the ground, then the composter on top of it (so bone meal drops into the hopper below).
- Put another hopper into the top of the composter, with a chest feeding that hopper.
- Drop your excess seeds and crops into the top chest, and the setup composts them and collects the bone meal automatically.
Hooked up to a crop or cactus farm, this quietly turns your overflow into an endless bone meal stream while you do other things.
The Villager Use
