hatch open in dead by daylight

The easiest way to find the hatch in Dead by Daylight is to listen for its distinct sound once it’s available. Learn how to find the hatch in DBD by cranking up your volume and listening closely for its mating call. Additionally, using the Shack Hatch Offering guarantees that the hatch will spawn on the outside wall opposite the window of the shack, making it easy to locate. For map-specific tips, knowing where the hatch tends to spawn based on previous experiences (e.g., bottom floors in indoor maps or specific loops in outdoor maps) can also increase your chances of finding it before the killer.

How Does the Hatch Appear in DBD?

The hatch spawns when there’s only one survivor left in the trial. Previously, it would only appear and open if at least two generators were repaired, but fortunately, the devs have changed that. Once the hatch opens, the killer can close it, triggering the Endgame Collapse. If the hatch is closed, survivors need a key to reopen it. Killers can no longer perform the Hatch Interrupt to stop survivors from escaping.

What Perk Shows You the Hatch in DBD?

The perk Left Behind by Bill Overbeck will show you the aura of the hatch within 32 metres. It will only activate once you are the last survivor remaining in the trial. So, hopefully, everyone else either dies or they escape the gate. Pairing Left Behind with Open-Handed by Ace Visconti will also increase the aura-reading abilities by 16 metres, allowing you to spot the hatch more easily.

Hatch Locations in Dead by Daylight

  • Shack: If you burn the Shack hatch offering, it will spawn on the outside wall opposite the window.
  • The Game (Gideon Meat Plant): The hatch will always spawn on the bottom floor. It’s often found near loops or in the halls. It tends to spawn at loops and larger rooms.
  • Midwich Elementary School: The hatch will always spawn on the bottom floor. Usually spawns in classrooms. If you hug the outer wall of the hallway, you can hear the hatch inside each classroom without having to enter every single one. If you don’t hear it from the hallway, it’s in the center courtyard.
  • Lery’s Memorial Institute: Circle the exterior of the map. If you don’t hear the hatch, cut through the middle from the exit gate.
  • Hawkins National Laboratory: The hatch often spawns inside or right outside the long rooms. It also tends to spawn in the storage room or the room with a grate walkway.
  • Raccoon City Police Department (RPD): The hatch used to spawn upstairs, but that had been fixed with the map being reworked. It will typically spawn in the main lobby or the shower room.
  • Badham Preschool: Start searching in the downstairs area of the school. Hatch often spawns there, especially in the basement.
  • Dead Dawg Saloon: Frequent hatch spawn locations are directly underneath the Gallows or on the road outside of Main.
  • Red Forest: Hatch can spawn anywhere due to the large space. In Red Forest, check near loops and move inward.
  • The Swamp: In Swamp, it often spawns near structures or inside buildings, like at the bottom of the stairs where the basement would be in Grim.
  • Temple of Purgation: Check downstairs in Main, then search the exterior of the map.
  • Grim Pantry: The hatch often spawns near the two-story structure. You should hear it from either side of the building.

What Key Opens the Hatch in Dead by Daylight?

The Skeleton Key and Dull Key can both be used to open a closed hatch. Pressing the ‘Use item’ button while standing over the closed hatch will open it. Also using a Dull Key add-on will make it so Using a Key to open the closed Hatch consumes this Add-on instead. A few years ago the devs nerfed keys, making it so you can only re-open the hatch if your key isn’t depleted.

A few extra tips for using a key to re-open a hatch: Position yourself on the opposite side of the map from where the final survivor is hooked. If the hatch shuts immediately, you’ll know it’s right next to the hook. Alternatively, find a high spot to camp and keep an eye out for the killer patrolling potential hatch locations. Once they walk over it, rush in to re-open it!
