Minecraft Y levels explained with diamond, emerald, gold, iron, copper, redstone, lapis lazuli, coal, and other ore blocks displayed throughout an underground cave.

Minecraft Y levels decide where each ore spawns, and the best Y level depends on the ore: diamonds and redstone are most common at Y -59, gold at -18, lapis at -2, iron at 14, copper at 43, coal at 45, emeralds at 85 (mountain biomes only), and ancient debris at Y 16 in the Nether. Mine at that height and you hit the most ore per block of tunnel.

Since the Caves and Cliffs update rebuilt world generation in 1.18, every ore has its own height curve. Ores no longer sit in one band near the bottom, and the old advice to dig to Y 11 for everything is out of date. Guides and videos also disagree with each other, because some quote the numbers in the generation files and others quote what actually appears in a world.

This guide uses the measured numbers from the Minecraft Wiki ore page and the diamond ore page. I checked them against Minecraft Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.52. At the end you will find a link to the detailed guide for each ore.

Quick Answer

  • Diamond and redstone: Y -59. Both stop appearing above Y 16.
  • Gold: Y -18, with a second, much wider band in badlands biomes.
  • Lapis lazuli: Y -2, spread out between -64 and 64.
  • Iron: Y 14, but it also appears at high altitude from Y 80 up.
  • Copper and coal: Y 43 and Y 45, so you can find both without going underground at all.
  • Emerald: Y 85, but only in mountain biomes.
  • Ancient debris: Y 16 in the Nether, with a diamond pickaxe.

Version checked: Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.52.

Two things to keep in mind. First, the peak is where the ore is most common, not the only place it appears. Second, the wiki measures these from real worlds, because terrain and caves block ore in the files, so a peak from a real world is the safer number to plan around.

What a Y Level Actually Is

Y is the vertical coordinate. In the Overworld it starts at -64 at the bottom and climbs to 320 at the top. Press F3 in Java, or turn on Show Coordinates in the world settings in Bedrock, and read the Y number. If you are not sure how to display your position, my coordinates guide shows both editions.

Deepslate only generates below Y 8, which is why the ores you find in the deep parts of the world are their deepslate versions. A deepslate diamond is not a different or better ore. It is the same diamond in a different block.

Diamonds: Why -59 Is the Number

Diamond ore becomes more common as you go down, and the wiki says deepslate diamond is most commonly found at Y -58 and -59. It generates in four batches per chunk, all between Y 16 and -63, except one batch that only goes from Y -4 to -63.

The more useful detail is what those batches do next to air. In most batches an ore block has a 50 to 70 percent chance to be skipped if it touches air, and one batch of 4 blobs per chunk never generates next to air. In plain terms, diamonds hide from open caves. Exposed diamonds are less common than buried ones. Water and lava do not reduce the chance, so diamonds also show up on the walls of aquifers.

The practical result: mine through solid stone at Y -59 rather than walking cave systems. Strip mine in a straight line and look at the walls as you go. My best level for diamonds and how to find diamonds guides cover the tunnel layouts in detail.

Iron, Copper and Coal: Plentiful and Easy

Iron peaks at Y 14 with a second range from Y 80 to 320. It does not generate at 73 to 79. Copper has a measured peak at 43 and a range of -16 to 112, so a cave at ground level is usually enough. Coal ranges from 0 to 320, with a measured peak at 45. None of these three is worth a trip to the bottom of the world. Use the iron Y level guide, the copper Y level guide and the coal Y level guide when you need volume, or build an iron farm and stop mining iron entirely.

Gold, Redstone and Lapis: The Deep Middle

Gold peaks at Y -18 and is capped at Y 32 in most biomes. In badlands it keeps going up to Y 256, so a red desert hill near the surface is a fast gold source. Redstone peaks at -59 like diamonds, which means one tunnel gets you both. Lapis lazuli is rare and wide: it appears from -64 to 64 and peaks at -2, so mine at Y -2 and look carefully. For tunnel layouts see the gold, redstone and lapis lazuli guides.

Emeralds: Mountains Only

Emerald ore generates only in mountain biomes, as single scattered blocks rather than clusters. The wiki lists meadows, cherry groves, groves, snowy slopes, jagged, frozen and stony peaks, and the windswept hills and forest variants. The range is -16 to 320 with a measured peak at 85. If your world has no mountains, you will not find emerald ore. In that case trade for emeralds instead, as covered in the best ways to get emeralds and the best villager trades for emeralds.

Nether Y Levels and Ancient Debris

In the Nether, ancient debris peaks at Y 16 and quickly tapers off above and below. It is commonly found up to Y 23, rare between 22 and 119, and absent at Y 120 and above. You need a diamond pickaxe to mine it. Nether quartz and nether gold both peak at Y 114. The full routes are in the ancient debris Y level guide, the quartz Y level guide and the netherite guide.

A Simple Mining Plan

Pick one Y level and stay on it. For diamonds and redstone, dig a main tunnel at Y -59 and branch side tunnels off it with two solid blocks between each pair. A two block high tunnel shows you the walls, floor and ceiling around it, and with that spacing every block on those layers touches a tunnel. This is my usual layout, not a wiki rule, but it is a simple way to cover a lot of stone without wandering.

Carry an iron pickaxe or better, because diamond, redstone, gold and emerald will not drop from a stone pickaxe. Bring a water bucket in case you open a lava pool, and place torches as you go so mobs cannot spawn in your tunnel. Check your Y level every time you change direction, because a slight slope in a long tunnel drifts you away from the peak.

Common Y Level Mistakes

  • Digging to Y 11 for everything. That was the pre-1.18 rule. Diamonds now sit near -59, and the old rule just puts you in the wrong place.
  • Trusting every video. Peaks differ between creators because some read the data files and some count real ore. Use the wiki’s measured numbers.
  • Chasing caves. Open caves hide diamonds because of the air exposure rules. Tunnelling through stone finds more.
  • Using the wrong tool. Diamonds, emeralds, gold and redstone need an iron pickaxe or better. Ancient debris needs diamond.
  • Digging straight down. Lava and drops wait below. Take a staircase or tunnel in at an angle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Y level for diamonds in Minecraft?

Y -59 is the best level. The wiki lists deepslate diamond as most common at Y -58 and -59, and diamond ore does not generate above Y 16.

What is the best Y level for iron in Minecraft?

Iron peaks at Y 14. It also generates from Y 80 to 320, but not between Y 73 and 79.

What is the best Y level for gold?

Gold peaks at Y -18 and does not generate above Y 32 in most biomes. In badlands biomes it generates up to Y 256.

Where do emeralds spawn in Minecraft?

Emerald ore only generates in mountain biomes such as meadows, groves, snowy slopes and the peaks. The measured peak is Y 85.

What is the best Y level for ancient debris?

Y 16 in the Nether. It is commonly found up to Y 23 and cannot be found at Y 120 or higher. You need a diamond pickaxe to mine it.

Did the best Y levels change in 1.18?

Yes. Since the Caves and Cliffs world generation update, each ore has its own height curve. Digging to Y 11 for everything no longer applies.
