How to Make Glass
The whole process is one smelt:
- Get sand. Dig it with a shovel from deserts, beaches, and riverbanks. Both regular sand and red sand work, and red sand still makes clear glass (the color is lost in smelting).
- Smelt it. Put the sand in a furnace with any fuel (coal, charcoal, or wood). Each sand becomes one glass block in about 10 seconds.
One important note: glass has to be smelted in a regular furnace. A blast furnace only handles metals and a smoker only handles food, so neither will smelt sand.
Making Glass Panes
Glass panes are the thin, window-style version. Fill the bottom two rows of a crafting table with 6 glass (three across each row) and you get 16 glass panes. Panes take up only part of a block and connect to their neighbors, so they look like real window frames and are far more efficient than solid blocks for large windows.
Making Stained Glass
To add color, you dye glass. Place 8 glass in a ring around the crafting grid with 1 dye in the center, and you get 8 stained glass in that color. There is a color for every dye, so you can make all 16 colors.
You can also craft stained glass into stained glass panes (6 stained glass makes 16 panes), or dye plain glass panes directly. One Warning: Breaking Glass
Here is the catch: if you break glass without Silk Touch, it shatters and drops nothing. To pick glass or stained glass back up, break it with a Silk Touch tool. So place it carefully, and keep a Silk Touch pickaxe handy if you plan to move a build. Glass still acts as a solid block you can walk on and build against; it is just see-through, which makes it great for concrete-and-glass modern builds.
