How to Find Trail Ruins in Minecraft 1.20?

Finding Trail Ruins in Minecraft is hard, especially for beginners. We are sharing some cool tips and tricks to help you out.

1) Best Biomes for Finding Trail Ruins

You can find trail ruins in forested, old-growth, and Taiga biomes only. To identify older biomes, look at the length of the trees there. If its trees are longer than regular ones, it’s an older biome. Moreover, trail ruins appear in cold and snowy biomes rather than warm biomes like Savannah and deserts.  They appear close to water such as rivers, aquifers, and oceans.

2) Spot Trail Ruins Naturally

They are easy to spot as the blocks that appear on the surface are not usually found in the biomes they are located in. For example, blocks like terracotta and suspicious gravel are found on the surface of trail ruins but you won’t find them easily anywhere else.

3) Underwater Trail Ruins

Sometimes some blocks appear on the surface of the water hinting at the possible presence of a trail ruins. They look different and unusual, so you can easily notice them. But the chances of it are rare. However, you can encounter it if you are lucky enough.

4) Using Chunkbase

The easiest way to locate Trail Ruins is by using third-party websites such as Chunkbase. This method works best for those who don’t wanna spend a long time finding it.

You have to go to the seed map and enter your seed there. It will show you every structure out there in your seed. Right now there is not a separate finder for Trail Ruins. However, you can use filters to deselect all other structures except Trail Ruins. This will show you the nearest Trail Ruins. You can then teleport yourself there.

How to Excavate Trail Ruins in Minecraft?

Trail ruins are different than other bounties. There are not any chests to get loot items. Rather you have to collect suspicious gravels to claim any bounty. You need to brush the suspicious gravel so that the loot item appears and then collect it. Keep in mind that whatever you see on the surface is just the tip of the tower. You have to excavate to the bottom to get your hands on all the collectibles.

Moreover, suspicious gravel is fragile. It will break if you use silk touch on it or the block underneath it is removed. The best way is to brush it where it is. After all, no one wants to destroy a suspicious gravel holding rare items.

How to identify Suspicious Gravel?

Suspicious gravel looks similar to a gravel block at first glance. But there is a difference in texture if you look closely. However, if you are still unsure it is best to use a brush on it. If a loot item emerges, it is a suspicious gravel. Otherwise, it is an ordinary gravel block.

You will find suspicious gravel only inside the trail ruins building and in the pathways.

What Loot Can You Find in Trail Ruins?

You can find two different loot tables inside a trail ruin. Rare suspicious gravel and common suspicious gravel. Most of the time they will be intermixed so it will be hard to differentiate. However, you can judge based on items that emerge.

Common loot items include but are not limited to:

  • Dye
  • Brick
  • Candle
  • Emerald
  • Wheat
  • Beetroot seeds
  • Glass panes
  • Dead Bush
  • Flowerpot
  • Golden Nugget

There is nothing special about these items as you can find them elsewhere too. They are just there to fill up the loot table. However, the real deal is to find rare items. They include but are not limited to:

  • Pottery sherds – 8.3% chance
  • Armor Trim Smithing Templates – 8.3% chance
  • Smithing templates – 8.3% chance
  • Music Disc – 8.3% chance

Pottery Sherds

There are seven types of pottery sherds which are burn, danger, friend, heart, heartbreak, howl, and sheaf.

You can craft pottery sherds together to create a decorated pot. Moreover, you can place different potteries on a decorated pot to create new styles. Any pottery shards you find in the Trail Ruins are exclusive and can not be found anywhere else.

Armor Trim Smithing Template

Four kinds of armor-trimming smithing templates are found that are host, raiser, shaper, and wayfinder.

Just like pottery sherds, any armor trim smithing template found in Trail Ruins is exclusive and can not be found elsewhere.

Are Trail Ruins the Same As Ocean Ruins?

They may look similar as both are ancient treasures. But, there are some key differences between them. Ocean ruins are exclusive to ocean biomes and can not be found anywhere else. While Trail ruins are found in three types of different biomes.

Ocean ruins contain chests as loot items. On the other side, Trail Ruins have no chests but suspicious gravel which can be brushed off to get rare loot items.

It is very likely to encounter enemies when going into an ocean ruin. However, Trail Ruins are usually free of any mobs and can be explored without any worry. They may have natural mobs spawning them which is not an exception. So it is best to light it up with a few torches to prevent that.
