You placed a job site block, waited, and the villager just stands there in its brown robe doing nothing. Frustrating, but almost always fixable. This guide runs through every reason a villager refuses to take a job and exactly how to fix each one.
Everything here is confirmed in the current 2026 version of Minecraft (26.2) and covers both Java and Bedrock.
Quick answer: a villager will not take a job if it is a nitwit or a baby, if it has already traded (its profession is locked), if it cannot reach a valid job site block, or if another villager already claimed that block. Give an unemployed adult a reachable, unclaimed job block during the day and it will take the job.
Job Problems at a Glance
| Reason it won’t work | Fix |
|---|---|
| Nitwit (green robe) | Nitwits never work, breed a new villager |
| Baby villager | Wait for it to grow into an adult |
| Already traded | Profession is locked, use a different villager |
| Can’t reach the block | Clear a walkable path to the job block |
| Block already claimed | Give it its own unclaimed job block |
| Night time | Wait for daytime working hours |
1. It’s a Nitwit

The most common surprise: nitwits wear a green robe (not the brown robe of an unemployed villager) and can never take a job, ever. If your villager is green, no job block will work. You will need to breed a new villager and hope for a normal one, since nitwit status is permanent.
2. It’s a Baby

Baby villagers cannot take jobs. They will only claim a workstation once they grow into adults, which takes about 20 minutes of in-game time. Just wait for it to grow up, then place the job block.
3. It Has Already Traded

If the villager once had a profession and you traded with it even once, its profession is locked permanently. It will not switch to a new job block. This is the big one for trading halls, always lock in the profession you want before your first trade. If you are stuck, use a fresh villager or cure a zombie villager instead. Our how to change a villager’s job guide covers this in full.
4. It Can’t Reach the Job Block
A villager has to physically path to and stand at a job site block to claim it. If a wall, fence, water, a one-block gap, or another mob is in the way, it will never link. Make sure there is a clear, walkable route to the front of the block, and that the block is not buried or covered so the villager can access it.
5. Another Villager Already Claimed It
Each job site block can only belong to one villager. If a different villager linked to it first, your target villager has nothing to claim. When setting up several villagers, place the job blocks one at a time so each villager claims its own, or they race and steal each other’s. Also remove any spare workstations nearby that could confuse the claim.
6. It’s Night, or the Villager Isn’t Settled
Villagers claim jobs during daytime working hours, not at night. They also need to be settled with a bed to behave normally. If nothing happens, give the villager a nearby bed, make sure it is day, and confirm it is a plain unemployed adult (brown robe, no green). Frequently Asked Questions
The usual reasons are that it is a nitwit or a baby, it has already traded (locking its profession), it cannot reach the job site block, or another villager already claimed that block. Fix the specific cause and it will take the job.
Nitwits wear a green robe instead of the brown robe of an unemployed villager. Nitwits can never take a job, so you will need to breed a new villager to replace one.
Trading locks a villager’s profession permanently. Once it has completed a single trade, it cannot switch to a new job block, so you need a different, untraded villager.
It needs to be close and reachable. The villager has to be able to walk to and stand at the block, so clear any walls, water, or gaps blocking the path to it.
Each block links to only one villager, and they compete for nearby blocks. Place job blocks one at a time, and give each villager its own block with no spare workstations nearby.
No. Baby villagers only claim a workstation after they grow into adults, which takes about 20 minutes. Wait for it to grow up before placing the job block.
Most of the time a villager that won’t work is a nitwit, is locked from a past trade, or simply cannot reach the block. Confirm you have a plain brown-robed adult with a clear path to an unclaimed job block in daylight, and the job will stick.
