Three of the “smith” professions accept coal as a novice-level buy trade, each giving 1 emerald for 15 coal:
- Armorer – job block is the blast furnace. Level one up and it eventually sells enchanted diamond armor.
- Toolsmith – job block is the smithing table. Sells stone, iron, and later enchanted diamond tools.

There is one catch, especially on Java Edition. A novice smith gets a random subset of its novice trades, so it doesn’t always offer the coal buy on the first try. On Bedrock, these smiths reliably get the coal trade at novice. On Java, if you do not see it, reroll the villager by breaking and replacing its job site block before you trade, and check again. Once you trade, the offers lock in, so reroll first.
