Minecraft offers a variety of enchantments to add special powers to different items. From armor to tools to other stuff, enchantments are available for every group. One such enchantment is Sweeping Edge. Players find it very handy to boost sweep attacks when using swords.
The Sweeping Edge enchantment sounds tricky when compared with others. However, it’s easy to use once you know it well. To use it effectively and clear out any confusion, we will explore this enchantment in detail here.
How Do You Sweep Attack in Minecraft?
Sweeping edge enchantment boosts a sweep attack in Minecraft. So let us first discuss what a sweep attack is.
A sweep attack is a strategy of combat through a sword in Minecraft. You move the sword in a horizontal slashing motion to hit multiple enemies at once. It is particularly effective when fighting with a large mob. Instead of a regular vertical slash, this involves hitting the sword horizontally with a touch of knockback effect. Your target moves a touch back which is pretty handy when dealing with a large mob.
When Can You Sweep Attack?
You can trigger a sweeping attack if your attack recharge meter is at least 84.8% full and you are either standing still or walking. If you are sprinting or the recharge meter is less than 84.8%, you can not execute the sweep attack. You may use any kind of sword (wooden, iron, stone, diamonds, etc) to execute it. However, once executed, you can only trigger the next one until the cooldown period is over. To enhance its damage effect, sweeping edge enchantments are usually used.
How Sweeping Edge Enchantment Works in Minecraft?
A sweeping edge enchantment increases the amount of damage to the mobs around the ones you are attacking. So you get more power in your sweeps. It has 3 levels with varying intensity of attacks. The higher the level, more the damage. We have summarized them below:
- Level – 1 triggers 50% damage to the mobs around
- Level – 2 triggers 67% damage to the mobs around
- Level – 3 triggers 75% damage to the mobs around
This increases the attack damage of the sword. If you are interested in equations, we have got one for you to make you understand it completely. After enchanting your sword with Sweeping Edge, the attack damage will be:

1 + Attack Damage x (Sweeping Edge level / (Sweeping Edge level +1)) rounded up.
Attack damage is defined as the sword’s total damage after Sharpness, Smite, and other factors are taken into the sword’s base damage amount.
This is very useful in scenarios where you are surrounded by a large attacking mob. Once you bring out a sweeping edge enchanted sword, you can do a lot more damage than normally possible. The affected area is within 1 block by 0.25 block by 1 block area of the mob. Any enemy within 3 blocks of your feet can be affected.
How to Get the Minecraft Sweeping Edge Enchantment?
You can add the sweeping edge enchantment to any sword just like any other enchantment. You just need an enchanted book. With the help of an anvil, enchantment table, or game command, you can add a sweeping edge to your sword. To use the game command, your profile must have OP permissions. The enchant command is ‘/enchant.’

In case you are wondering how to find an enchanted book, don’t worry as there are a lot of places to collect them. Treasure chests, monster room chests, fishing, dungeons, librarian villagers, etc are great places to find an enchanted book.
Is Sweeping Edge Enchantment Available in Bedrock Edition?
Sweeping Edge is an enchantment exclusive only to Java Edition. So, it is not available in Bedrock Edition. And there is a reason for it.
Do you know that the Bedrock edition does not contain the sword sweep action at all? Yes, that is true! So it makes no point to include an enchantment for an action not existing in the first place.
After all sword combat is one of the main differences in Java and Bedrock editions. There are no sword cooldown periods in Bedrock Edition as well. However, Bedrock has other upgrades that get the job done. For instance, you can use Knockback to upgrade your gear and level up your game.
Will Sharpness of Your Sword Stack with Sweeping Edge Enchantment?
The short answer is no it won’t. There is a difference in how they work. Sharpness deals with the primary item you are attacking. While Sweeping Edge deals with the mob around the one you are attacking.
So they will not stack together technically speaking but they would work together to enhance the damage done. Sharpness will induce more damage on your specific target while sweeping edge will help to get rid of mobs with lesser sweeps.

That is all you need to master the Minecraft Sweeping Edge enchantment. You will notice a huge difference when you fight using a normal sword versus with a sweeping edge enchanted sword. It was rather a tricky one as it involved damage percentages and some equations but we hope you are well-equipped now.
