Step 1: Gather the Ingredients
You need almost nothing:
- 6 wood planks of any type (chop a tree and craft logs into planks).
- 1 iron ingot (smelt one raw iron in a furnace).

Step 2: Craft the Shield
Open a crafting table and lay the ingredients in a Y-shape:

Step 3: Use It in Your Off-Hand
Move the shield to your off-hand slot (press F on PC by default) so you can still hold a sword or pickaxe in your main hand. To block:
- Java Edition: hold the use button (right-click) to raise the shield. You cannot attack while blocking, so drop the block to swing, then raise it again.
- Bedrock Edition: sneak (crouch) to raise the shield.

- Axe-wielding attackers (like vindicators, or players with an axe), which can disable your shield for a few seconds
- Piercing crossbows, which shoot straight through
- Some special attacks like potions and certain area effects

Customize and Repair Your Shield
Two extras make shields even better:
