The crossbow is Minecraft’s heavy-hitting ranged weapon: it hits harder than a bow, stays loaded so you can fire the instant you need to, and can even launch fireworks. This guide covers the recipe, the extra ingredient it needs, and how to use it.
Everything here is confirmed in the current 2026 version of Minecraft (26.3).
Quick answer: craft a crossbow from 3 sticks, 2 string, 1 iron ingot, and 1 tripwire hook. Then load it by holding the use button, and fire with a second click, it stays loaded until you shoot.
Crossbow Recipe at a Glance
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Ingredients | 3 sticks + 2 string + 1 iron ingot + 1 tripwire hook |
| Crafted on | Crafting table |
| Also from | Pillagers (~8.5% drop), outpost/bastion chests, fletcher villager |
| Durability | 326 (Java) / 464 (Bedrock) |
| Special ammo | Arrows and firework rockets |
Step 1: Gather the Ingredients
The crossbow needs one ingredient a bow does not, a tripwire hook:
- 3 sticks (from planks)
- 2 string (from spiders)
- 1 iron ingot (from smelting raw iron)
- 1 tripwire hook (craft from 1 iron ingot, 1 stick, and 1 wood plank)
Everything here is early-game, so the crossbow is accessible as soon as you have a bit of iron.
Step 2: Craft the Crossbow

Open a crafting table and place:
- Top row: stick, iron ingot, stick
- Middle row: string, tripwire hook, string
- Bottom row: empty, stick, empty
So a stick and iron ingot and stick run across the top, string, tripwire hook, string across the middle, and one stick in the bottom-center. That gives you a crossbow.
Other Ways to Get a Crossbow

You can also find crossbows without crafting:
- Pillagers drop a crossbow about 8.5% of the time, and they carry them at pillager outposts and raids.
- Chests in pillager outposts and bastion remnants can hold crossbows, sometimes enchanted (bastions are the only chest source of enchanted ones).
- A fletcher villager sells crossbows at journeyman level, and enchanted ones at master level.
Step 3: Use the Crossbow
The crossbow works differently from a bow:
- Hold the use button (right-click) to load it, it draws back and stays loaded.
- Click again to fire the moment you want, no charging needed.
That “load once, fire instantly” behavior is the crossbow’s big advantage. It also hits harder: in Java the damage is 6 to 11, and in Bedrock a flat 9. On top of arrows, you can load a firework rocket for a big explosive hit. Enchantments make it even stronger, Multishot fires three arrows at once, Piercing shoots through mobs, and Quick Charge speeds up loading, covered in our best crossbow enchantments guide.
Repair a crossbow on a grindstone, crafting table, or anvil. If you want the lighter, faster-firing alternative, see our how to make a bow guide, and for the fireworks it can launch, our how to make fireworks guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Place 3 sticks, 2 string, 1 iron ingot, and 1 tripwire hook on a crafting table: stick-iron-stick on top, string-tripwire hook-string in the middle, and a stick in the bottom-center.
It is a redstone component crafted from 1 iron ingot, 1 stick, and 1 wood plank. The crossbow needs one.
Hold the use button to load it, then click again to fire. It stays loaded until you shoot, unlike a bow which you must charge each time.
It hits harder and can fire instantly once loaded, but reloads slower. A bow charges faster and is lighter. Many players carry both.
Yes. Load a firework rocket instead of an arrow for a powerful explosive shot, great against groups and bosses.
Pillagers drop them about 8.5% of the time, they appear in pillager outpost and bastion chests, and fletcher villagers sell them at journeyman level.
The crossbow costs a few sticks, string, iron, and a tripwire hook, and it rewards you with a hard-hitting weapon you can keep loaded and ready. Craft one, enchant it with Multishot or Piercing, and it becomes one of the best ranged tools in the game.
