The Recipe
At a crafting table, place:
- Top row: empty, iron ingot, empty
- Middle row: iron ingot, redstone dust, iron ingot

What a Compass Actually Points To
Here is the part everyone gets wrong. A normal compass points to the world spawn point, the fixed center of the world where you first appeared. It does not point north, and sleeping in a bed to reset your respawn point does not change where the compass points. So a compass is really a “take me back to the world spawn” tool, which is perfect for finding your first base if you built near spawn.
Hold it in your hand or put it in your hotbar and the red needle swings to track world spawn as you turn and move.
Why It Spins in the Nether and End
Take a normal compass into the Nether or the End and the needle just spins randomly, because world spawn is an Overworld concept and the compass cannot find it from another dimension. If you want a compass that works across dimensions, you need the lodestone version below.

This is the upgrade that makes a compass genuinely powerful. Craft a lodestone (1 netherite ingot and 8 chiseled stone bricks), place it wherever you want, then use your compass on the lodestone. The best part is that it is movable. Pick the lodestone up, place it somewhere new, and link the compass again to point at the new spot. That makes it ideal for marking a Nether portal, a base, or a build you keep coming back to.
The Recovery Compass: Find Your Last Death
The other special version is the recovery compass, which points to where you last died, so you can run back for your dropped items. To craft it, surround a compass with 8 echo shards (echo shards come from loot chests in Ancient Cities, deep underground). Like the lodestone compass, it only points true when you are in the same dimension you died in; otherwise it spins.
Using a Compass With a Map
A compass also upgrades your maps. Combine a compass with a map (on a crafting or cartography table) to make a locator map, which adds a marker showing your live position and facing on the map. That turns a static map into a real GPS-style navigation aid, and it is the main reason many players craft a compass at all.
