That is 6 planks and 3 books for one bookshelf. Any wood type works for the planks (oak, spruce, birch, and so on), so use whatever you have.
Gathering the Books First
The books are the real work. Each of the 3 books needs:
- 1 leather (dropped by cows, horses, and a few other mobs), and
- 3 paper (paper is 3 sugar cane each).

The Main Use: Boosting Your Enchanting Table
This is why most people make bookshelves. Surround an enchanting table with them to unlock stronger enchantments:
- 15 bookshelves gets you the maximum level 30 enchantments.
- The shelves must sit one block away from the table, with a gap between them and the table (a solid block in the gap breaks the connection).
- The layout is flexible. The classic setup is a ring one block out, but you can stack them, place some higher or lower, or run diagonals, as long as they are in range.
Bookshelves are also used to craft a lectern (1 bookshelf plus wooden slabs), and of course they look great lining a library wall.
One Warning: Breaking a Bookshelf
Here is the gotcha. If you break a bookshelf without Silk Touch, it does not drop the shelf. It drops 3 books instead, and the wood is lost, so you have to recraft the whole thing. To move a bookshelf and keep it intact, break it with a Silk Touch tool. This matters a lot when you are rearranging an enchanting room.
You can also find bookshelves ready-made in village libraries, stronghold libraries, and woodland mansions, and some Librarian villagers sell them, which can save you the crafting.
