Growing mushrooms in Minecraft is a fun activity. Besides being a food source, they provide an aesthetic touch to your structures. This blog post will tell you why is it a good idea to start growing mushrooms. It will also provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to grow them. In the end, we will discuss the giant mushrooms that add a fun element to Minecraft!
Types of Mushrooms Found in Minecraft
You can generally find two kinds of mushrooms in Minecraft – red and brown colored.
Red mushrooms are one of my favorite ones to grow. They look beautiful with the red top and you can even turn a giant red mushroom into a starter house from the inside.
On the other hand, brown mushrooms grow into flat-top brown-colored mushrooms. To be honest, they don’t look that pretty. However, they are ideal for various food recipes such as Mushroom Stew and Fermented Spider Eye.

Resources Required to Grow Mushrooms
The essential resources to grow a mushroom are:
- Mushroom blocks – You can find one in an underground cave. If not lucky enough, you can surely find them in Dark Oak Forest. You should aim for atleast a block of both types of mushrooms.
- Grass or dirt blocks – Mushrooms can not be grown on typical sand blocks. Rather you can only grow them on grass and dirt blocks.
- A shady dark area or specialized soils like mycelium or podzol (more on this later on)
- Bone meal – if you want to grow giant ones
Why Grow Mushrooms in Minecraft?
Using our tips and tricks, you can grow lots and lots of mushrooms in Minecraft. However, before learning how to grow them, you must be well aware of where to use them. Let us take a look at some of their uses:
- Mushrooms are beautiful and look pleasing to the eye. You can use them to add an aesthetic touch to your buildings and structures. Whether huge or small, they have good decoration potential.
- You can use mushrooms to make Fermented Spider Eye. You just need a brown mushroom, sugar, and a spider eye. A fermented spider eye can make various potions like Potion of Weakness, Potion of Harming, etc that work like wonder.
- You can prepare various Mushroom Stews using them. These stews provide one of the best hunger saturation in the game. So you can get loads of food by growing them.
Step-by-Step Guide to Grow Mushrooms in Minecraft
Growing mushrooms is an easy process. However, you need to take care of certain factors. Unlike other crops in Minecraft, mushrooms flourish in dark places. You can follow this step-by-step guide to grow your first mushroom:
- Find a grass or dirt area to plant mushrooms on.
- Take a 7 by 7 square and build brick walls around it.
- Build a roof over them to provide a shady dim area.
- Plant a red or brown mushroom inside it. The roof above will provide ample shade for mushrooms to grow despite the bright sunlight outside.
- Make sure that the mushroom is in the center (away from walls) and its surrounding blocks are free from anything. If you plant a mushroom next to the wall, and it is somehow removed, the mushroom will also pop right out. Moreover, being beside a wall can hinder its growth.

- There it is! You will soon see small mushrooms growing and spreading in the place.
- There is one more thing you can do. To prevent mobs from spawning your growing space, you may place torches in the ceiling 2 blocks above.
As you can see the whole process is very easy if you can take care of lighting level. Unlike other crops such as cactus farming in Minecraft, you do not require water or a specific arrangement to grow them.
Do Mushrooms Require a Specific Light Level to Grow?
Normally, mushrooms can not be planted in daylight. You require a light level of 12 or below to grow them. You can check the light level by pressing F3. Ideally, you should find a shaded dark area such as underground caves or a place beneath a large tree.
Can You Grow Mushrooms in Bright Daylight?
Yes, it is possible. By planting them on special soils such as mycelium, podzol, or nylium, mushrooms can grow in bright sunlight as well. Now you might be wondering how to find these soils. You can get them from mushroom islands, bamboo forests, and giant tree taigas. Using a silk touch shovel, you can collect them easily.
How to Grow Giant Mushrooms in Minecraft?
Giant mushrooms are a really fun element in Minecraft. You need open spaces to let them grow typically in the range of 7 by 7 blocks wide and 7 blocks tall. They grow in different heights and sizes but the shape remains the same. Some giant ones are grown to the ground as well.

Using Bone Meal to Grow Mushrooms
The magic ingredient for growing giant mushrooms is the bone meal. The growing process and requirements are the same as normal ones. It is just that we add bonemeal to it and it becomes a giant. You can craft bonemeal from bones or bone blocks obtained from skeletons. They are naturally found in the underground levels of the overworld as well.
Giant Mushrooms Are an Endless Supply of Food
When you knock a giant mushroom with an axe, you get extra little mushrooms just like saplings. This is your chance to have an endless supply of food. Imagine yourself in a cave. You find a mushroom in a large space area. If you have bonemeal with you – which is not that hard to get – you can grow a giant one there. In this way, you will have so much food that you won’t even know what to do with it!
