Step 1: Wait for a Full Hive
You can only collect honey when a bee nest or beehive is completely full, at honey level 5. Bees fill it slowly: each time a bee flies out, collects pollen from flowers, and returns, the honey level goes up by one, so it takes about five trips to fill.
You can tell it is ready two ways: the nest visually drips honey and its texture changes, and if you press F3 (on Java), it shows the exact honey level. Do not harvest early, a nest below level 5 gives you nothing.
Step 2: Place a Campfire Underneath (Important)
This is the step everyone forgets. Harvesting honey normally angers the bees, and a swarm of angry bees will sting and poison you. To avoid that, place a campfire directly under the nest or beehive (within a few blocks). The smoke calms the bees so they stay inside and do not attack.
If you do not have a campfire, lighting the block beneath the nest on fire does the same thing. One tip: block off the campfire itself so bees cannot wander into it and die.
Step 3: Use a Glass Bottle
With the campfire in place, hold an empty glass bottle (crafted from 3 glass) and use it on the full nest or beehive. The bottle fills and becomes a honey bottle, and the nest resets to honey level 0 to fill up again.
Note the difference between the two tools: a glass bottle collects honey, while shears collect honeycomb instead. Pick whichever you need.

Honey comes from bee nests (natural) or beehives (crafted):
- Bee nests generate on oak and birch trees in flowery biomes like plains, sunflower plains, flower forest, meadows, and cherry groves, usually about a 5% chance per tree.

- Craft honey blocks: 4 honey bottles make 1 honey block (a sticky redstone and parkour block), and you get the empty bottles back.
- Make sugar: 1 honey bottle crafts into 3 sugar, useful for cakes and other recipes.
