In a serious PvP fight, potions decide the winner as often as gear does. The right loadout heals you, buffs your damage, and cripples your opponent. This guide covers the best PvP potions and exactly how to use each one.
Everything here is confirmed in the current 2026 version of Minecraft (26.3).
Quick answer: the best PvP potions are Strength and Swiftness to buff yourself, Healing and Regeneration to stay alive, Fire Resistance to shut down fire and lava, and splash Harming, Poison, and Slowness to throw at your opponent. Brew splash versions of anything you plan to throw.
Best PvP Potions at a Glance
| Potion | Role | Why it wins fights |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Offense | +3 hearts of melee damage per hit (II: +6) |
| Swiftness | Mobility | +20% speed to chase or escape |
| Healing | Recovery | Instant health, no wait |
| Regeneration | Recovery | Sustained healing during a fight |
| Fire Resistance | Defense | Negates all fire and lava damage |
| Splash Harming | Offense | Instant damage thrown at the enemy |
| Splash Slowness | Control | Slows the opponent so they cannot escape |
Buff Yourself: Strength and Swiftness

- Strength is the top offensive potion. It adds about 3 hearts of damage per melee hit (Strength II adds 6), turning a normal sword into a one- or two-hit weapon. It only needs blaze powder to brew, so it is easy to keep stocked.
- Swiftness (Speed) gives a 20% movement boost, letting you run circles around your opponent, close distance, or retreat when low. Speed control wins a huge share of PvP fights.
Stay Alive: Healing, Regeneration, and Fire Resistance

- Healing (Instant Health) restores health instantly, which matters when a hit could kill you next. Drink it in a pinch rather than waiting on regen.
- Regeneration heals you steadily over time, so it is best drunk at the start of a fight to keep topping you up as you trade hits.
- Fire Resistance is one of the most important PvP potions of all: it negates all fire and lava damage, shutting down Fire Aspect swords, flame bows, and lava buckets. If your opponent uses fire, this alone can win the fight.
Cripple Your Opponent: Splash Potions
Throwable splash potions turn defense into offense. Always brew the splash version of these:
- Splash Harming (Instant Damage) deals instant damage on impact, and Harming II hits hard. Throw it when your opponent is already low.
- Splash Poison drains health over time, keeping the enemy at low HP and pressuring them to retreat.
- Splash Slowness (or the Turtle Master potion, which applies extreme slowness) slows your opponent so they cannot chase or flee, pairing perfectly with a Speed potion on yourself.
- Splash Weakness reduces the enemy’s melee damage, the opposite of giving yourself Strength.
One key rule: healing and harming are reversed on undead mobs (zombies, skeletons). Splash Harming heals them and Healing hurts them, so pick the right one against undead.
Brewing Your PvP Kit
All of these come from a brewing stand, and you turn a potion into a splash version by adding gunpowder. For the individual recipes see our how to make a Potion of Strength and how to make a Potion of Healing guides, and our best Minecraft potions guide for the full list.
A strong PvP loadout is simple: Strength and Speed on you, Fire Resistance and a Healing potion in reserve, and a handful of splash Harming and Slowness to throw. Bring that kit into a fight and you will win far more than you lose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Strength and Swiftness to buff yourself, Healing and Regeneration to survive, Fire Resistance to block fire and lava, and splash Harming, Poison, and Slowness to throw at your opponent.
Swiftness is the best all-round PvP potion because a 20% speed advantage lets you control the fight, and Strength is the best for raw damage, adding up to 6 hearts per hit at level II.
Buffs and healing for yourself (Strength, Speed, Healing, Regen, Fire Resistance) are drinkable. Anything you aim at your opponent, Harming, Poison, Slowness, Weakness, should be brewed as a splash potion.
It negates all fire and lava damage, which shuts down Fire Aspect swords, flame bows, and lava-bucket plays. Against a fire-based opponent it can decide the match.
Splash Harming for instant damage, splash Poison to drain them over time, or splash Slowness (or Turtle Master) to stop them escaping. Combine slowness on them with speed on yourself.
They are reversed on undead mobs. Splash Harming heals zombies and skeletons, while Healing damages them, so choose accordingly when fighting the undead.
