You may be surprised how powerful fishing rods can be in Minecraft. To think that actually using an unenchanted fishing rod is a travesty, really. Here is the ultimate guide for the best fishing rod enchantments in Minecraft.
All Fishing Rod Enchantments
- Luck of the Sea (Levels I-III)
Increases the chance of catching rare items, such as enchanted books, tools, and name tags, while reducing the likelihood of junk items like lily pads or rotten flesh. This enchantment improves the odds of “treasure” catches by roughly 2% per level and significantly lowers the chance of “junk” by about 2% per level. It also slightly reduces the chance of catching fish (around 0.15% per level). Overall, it’s essential for maximizing valuable loot from fishing. - Lure (Levels I-III)
Boosts the likelihood of a bite on the hook by decreasing the wait time by 5 seconds per level. This makes fishing faster and more efficient, especially for AFK fish farms, so you get to reel in fish at a more frequent rate. - Unbreaking (Levels I-III)
Increases the fishing rod’s durability, so it lasts longer before breaking. Combined with Mending, this makes your rod incredibly long-lasting, even after many fishing sessions. - Mending (Level I)
Repairs the fishing rod’s durability with XP from fishing. Since you gain experience while fishing, Mending essentially makes your rod self-sustaining, meaning it never needs repairs. Your best bet is to trade it with a Librarian Villager to obtain one. - Curse of Vanishing (Level I)
Causes the fishing rod to disappear after the player dies.
How to Obtain Fishing Rod Enchantments

There are three ways to get these enchantments. Aside from using commands, you can enchant the fishing rod at an Enchanting Table or find an already enchanted book.
The Enchanting Table is your best bet because you can keep rolling until you get it, instead of looting chests and villages with hugely small chances of finding a book or a villager selling the appropriate enchantments. Get a book with the right enchantment and just apply it using an anvil to the Fishing Rod.
Lure, Luck of the Sea and Unbreaking can be put on the fishing rod through either an enchanting table or an anvil. As for Mending and Curse of Vanishing, it can only be done through an anvil.
Best Enchantments for Fishing Rods

To get the best fishing rod in Minecraft, here’s the setup you should aim for:
- Lure III: A must-have to speed up your fishing and catch more items faster.
- Luck of the Sea III: Optional but beneficial, especially if you’re farming enchanted items or want rarer catches.
- Unbreaking III & Mending: Essential for the durability of the rod. With both, your rod will practically turn out indestructible. Just perfect for long, continuous fishing grind whenever you need it.
As of 1.21, there are only five enchantments that can be used on fishing rods. So we recommend Lure 3, Luck of the Sea 3, Unbreaking 3 and Mending. Obviously, not including the Curse of Vanishing as your fishing rod will disappear if you die.
Enchanted fishing rods can be obtained as “treasure” items through fishing, while unenchanted ones as “junk” items. It can also be found in the Underwater ruins with a 21-41% chance.
