The elytra is the rarest and most valuable movement item in Minecraft, so keeping it from breaking mid-flight matters. The good news is that it only accepts a handful of enchantments, which makes the “best” list short and easy. This guide covers exactly which enchantments an elytra can take, the ones you actually want, and why to skip the rest.
Everything here is confirmed in the current 2026 version of Minecraft (26.2).
Quick answer: put Unbreaking III and Mending on your elytra. Together, they make it effectively unbreakable, Unbreaking stretches its durability, and Mending repairs it from XP. Apply both with an anvil and enchanted books, since an elytra cannot be enchanted at a table.
Elytra Enchantments at a Glance
| Enchantment | Max | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Unbreaking | III | Best, huge durability boost |
| Mending | I | Best, auto-repairs from XP |
| Curse of Binding | I | Skip (locks it on) |
| Curse of Vanishing | I | Skip (lost on death) |
Only Four Enchantments Exist
An elytra can take just four enchantments: Unbreaking, Mending, Curse of Binding, and Curse of Vanishing. There is no Protection, no flight-speed enchant, nothing else. And because the elytra is a “specialized utility” item, you cannot use an enchanting table; everything goes on with an anvil and enchanted books.
Best: Unbreaking III

A plain elytra has 432 durability and loses 1 point per second of flight, about 7 minutes of gliding before you have to repair it. Unbreaking III cuts how often that durability is spent: it uses the tool formula, giving roughly a 25% chance to consume durability per second, so on average you lose only 1 point every 4 seconds. That stretches a single elytra to nearly half an hour of flight before it needs repair. It is the single biggest durability upgrade you can make.
Best: Mending

Mending is the enchantment that makes an elytra truly last forever. While the elytra is worn (or held), it repairs 2 durability per experience orb you pick up, so any mob farm, mining trip, or XP source slowly heals your wings. Pair it with Unbreaking III and your elytra will basically never break as long as you gather XP now and then.
One note: Mending is a treasure enchantment, so it only comes from enchanted books (villager trades, chest loot, or fishing), never from an enchanting table. A librarian villager is the most reliable source.
Skip These: The Curses
The other two are curses, and for a normal survival elytra you want to avoid both:
- Curse of Binding locks the elytra into your chest slot; you cannot take it off until it breaks or you die. Only useful for maps or pranks.
- Curse of Vanishing makes the elytra disappear when you die, so you cannot recover it. Some PvP players use it to deny loot, but for survival it just risks losing a rare item.
How to Apply Them
Get an Unbreaking III book and a Mending book, then use an anvil: place the elytra in the first slot and a book in the second, take the result, and repeat with the other book. That is it; your elytra is now nearly indestructible. If you got your elytra recently, this is the first thing to do with it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Unbreaking III and Mending. Unbreaking greatly extends durability, and Mending repairs the elytra from experience orbs, together making it effectively unbreakable.
No. An elytra can only take Unbreaking, Mending, Curse of Binding, and Curse of Vanishing. There is no Protection or any flight enchantment.
With an anvil and enchanted books. You cannot enchant an elytra at an enchanting table, so you need Unbreaking III and Mending books.
Yes, as long as it is worn or held. It restores 2 durability for each experience orb you collect, so gathering XP keeps your elytra repaired.
No, for normal survival. Binding locks it on until it breaks, and Vanishing makes it disappear when you die. Both are situational and usually avoided.
432, losing 1 per second of flight. Unbreaking III cuts that to about 1 every 4 seconds, and Mending tops it back up from XP.
The best elytra enchantments are refreshingly simple: Unbreaking III plus Mending turns your wings into a near-permanent item, applied with an anvil and two books. Skip the curses, keep some XP handy, and you may never have to hunt down another elytra again.
