A blast furnace is the upgrade every Minecraft player wants once they start mining seriously: it smelts ores, tools, and armor at double the speed of a regular furnace. If you have a pile of iron or gold ore waiting, a blast furnace clears it in half the time. It also happens to be the job block that turns a villager into an armor-selling Armorer.

The Recipe
At a crafting table, place:
- Top row: iron ingot, iron ingot, iron ingot
- Middle row: iron ingot, furnace, iron ingot
- Bottom row: smooth stone, smooth stone, smooth stone
That is 5 iron ingots, 1 furnace, and 3 smooth stone. The furnace goes dead center. If you do not have a furnace yet, craft one from 8 cobblestone in a ring.
The Tricky Part: Smooth Stone
Most people get stuck here, because the recipe needs smooth stone, not regular stone, and getting it takes two rounds of smelting:
- Smelt cobblestone in a furnace to get stone.
- Smelt that stone again to get smooth stone.

What a Blast Furnace Does (and Doesn’t)
A blast furnace is a specialist, not a replacement for your regular furnace:
- It smelts fast, but only metals. Ores, raw metals, and metal tools or armor (iron, gold, copper, and so on) smelt at twice the speed of a normal furnace. Great for clearing a big haul of ore quickly.
- It cannot smelt everything else. Food, sand, clay, wood, and other non-metal items will not go in a blast furnace at all. Keep a regular furnace or a smoker for those.
- It burns fuel twice as fast. You do not get more items per piece of fuel, you just get them done sooner. So the fuel cost per item is the same as a furnace, only quicker.
The Villager Bonus: Armorers
Placing a blast furnace near an unemployed villager turns them into an Armorer. Level an Armorer up and they will eventually sell enchanted diamond armor for emeralds, which can save you a lot of mining.
