Six glowing Minecraft horses lined up in a grassy field wearing leather, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite armor.

Horse armor protects your horse from damage, and the honest truth trips a lot of players up: you cannot craft most of it. Only leather horse armor has a recipe, while iron, gold, and diamond horse armor are found in chests. This guide covers what you can craft, where to find the rest, how much each type protects, and how to put it on your horse.

Everything here is confirmed in the current 2026 version of Minecraft (26.2).

Quick answer: you can only craft leather horse armor (7 leather in an H shape). Iron, gold, and diamond horse armor cannot be crafted, you find them in chests, most reliably in Nether fortresses.

The Only Craftable One: Leather

Leather horse armor is the single craftable type. Place 7 leather in an H shape on the crafting grid (fill the left and right columns and the center). You can also buy it from an expert-level leatherworker villager.

A nice bonus: leather horse armor can be dyed. On Java, combine it with dyes in a crafting grid (mix colors for custom shades); on Bedrock, dip it in a dyed cauldron. It offers the least protection, but it is the only one you can personalize.

Finding Iron, Gold, and Diamond Armor

The other three cannot be crafted at all, they were meant to be craftable years ago but the recipes were removed before release. You find them as chest loot. The best source by far is Nether fortresses, where chests have roughly a 60% chance to contain horse armor and there are more chests than any other structure.

Other places it generates, from most to least common: dungeons, desert temples, villages (in the weaponsmith’s chest), ancient cities, end cities, jungle temples, strongholds, and ruined portals. If you specifically want diamond horse armor, ancient cities have the highest per-chest chance (around 16%), though the Warden makes them risky. In current versions you can also upgrade diamond horse armor to netherite at a smithing table.

How Much Each Type Protects

Horse armor works differently from player armor in one fun way: gold is better than iron. The defense values are:

  • Leather: +3
  • Iron: +5
  • Gold: +7
  • Diamond: +11

All horse armor has infinite durability, it never wears out, and it cannot be enchanted. You also cannot smelt it for much: iron and gold horse armor only give a single nugget, so keep it as armor instead.

How to Put Armor on a Horse

You need to tame the horse first. Then:

  • Java: simply use (right-click) the horse while holding the armor, no need to mount.
  • Bedrock: mount the horse and open its inventory (the sneak/inventory button), then place the armor in the armor slot.

While you are there, add a saddle so you can steer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you craft horse armor in Minecraft?

Only leather horse armor is craftable (7 leather in an H shape). Iron, gold, and diamond horse armor cannot be crafted and must be found in chests.

Where do you find horse armor?

In chests in generated structures. Nether fortresses are the best source (about a 60% chance per chest). It also appears in dungeons, desert temples, villages, ancient cities, end cities, jungle temples, strongholds, and ruined portals.

How do you make leather horse armor?

Place 7 leather in an H shape on the crafting grid, filling the left and right columns plus the center cell. You can also buy it from an expert leatherworker villager.

Which horse armor is best?

Diamond, at +11 defense. Interestingly, gold (+7) is better than iron (+5) for horses, the opposite of player armor. Leather is weakest at +3.

Can you enchant horse armor?

No. Horse armor cannot be enchanted in survival, and it has infinite durability so it never breaks.

How do you put armor on a horse?

Tame the horse first. On Java, use (right-click) the horse while holding the armor. On Bedrock, mount it and place the armor in its inventory slot.

Horse armor is worth hunting for: craft or dye a leather set to start, then loot Nether fortresses for iron, gold, and diamond to keep your horse alive in a fight. Just remember gold beats iron here, and none of it can be crafted except leather.
