The Librarian is the single most valuable villager in Minecraft, because it is the only reliable way to get enchanted books, including the game’s most wanted enchantment: Mending. This guide covers every worthwhile librarian trade, how to fish for the exact book you want, and how to make those books cost almost nothing.
Everything here is confirmed in the current 2026 version of Minecraft (26.3).
Quick answer: the best librarian trade is an enchanted book, and the best of those is Mending. Librarians (job block: lectern) also sell bookshelves, lanterns, and (at master level) red and yellow candles, and buy paper for easy emeralds. Reroll a fresh librarian’s book by breaking and replacing its lectern before you trade, then cure a zombie librarian to make the book dirt cheap.
Best Librarian Trades at a Glance

Why the Librarian Is the Best Villager

A librarian sells enchanted books, and books are the only way to get treasure enchantments like Mending, which never appear on an enchanting table. That alone makes the librarian the backbone of any serious world. You create one by placing a lectern next to an unemployed villager, the same way you assign any villager job.
Enchanted books are priced from 5 to 64 emeralds, plus a regular book. The price is picked at random from a range that rises with the enchantment’s level and doubles for treasure enchantments, so a Mending book costs roughly 10 to 38 emeralds before discounts. That sounds expensive, until you learn the discount trick further down that drops it to one or two emeralds.
The Mending Book: The One You Want

Mending is the crown jewel. It uses your XP orbs to repair whatever tool, weapon, or armor it is on, so a Mending pickaxe or elytra effectively lasts forever. There is no other renewable way to get it, no enchanting table, no structure loot guarantee, so a Mending librarian is one of the most important villagers you can own. Build a dedicated librarian trading hall and you have infinite Mending books for the price of a little paper and a golden apple.
How to Get the Exact Book You Want

A fresh librarian offers a random enchanted book, and you do not have to accept a bad one:
- Place a lectern to turn a villager into a librarian.
- Look at the enchanted book it offers. If it is not the one you want (say it is Bane of Arthropods instead of Mending), break the lectern before trading.
- The villager goes unemployed. Replace the lectern and it rerolls to a new random book.
- Repeat until it offers the book you want, then make your first trade to lock it in forever.
This reroll trick only works before your first trade with that villager. Once you trade even once, its book is locked permanently, so choose carefully.
Other Librarian Trades Worth Knowing
Books are not the only reason to keep a librarian around:
- Bookshelves. A librarian sells bookshelves for 9 emeralds, a cheap way to power up an enchanting table. Breaking one drops 3 books. Librarians buy books at 4 per emerald, so this is not an emerald loop.
- Candles. At master level, librarians sell red and yellow candles for 3 emeralds each. They no longer sell name tags: that trade was removed in Java 26.1 (Bedrock 26.10), and the Wandering Trader sells them now. See what villager trades name tags.
- Paper. Librarians buy paper (around 24 for an emerald), so a sugarcane farm plus a librarian is a cheap early-game emerald income.
- Utility items. Depending on level, they also sell clocks, compasses, glass, and lanterns.
How to Make Books Almost Free

The real secret to cheap Mending is discounts, and they stack:
- Cure a zombie villager. Curing a librarian gives it permanent, massive trade discounts, a Mending book that cost 30 emeralds can drop to one or two. Trap a zombie villager out of sunlight, throw a Splash Potion of Weakness, and feed it a golden apple; the full process is in our cure a zombie villager guide.
- Hero of the Village. Winning a raid discounts all trades in the village for a while, stacking on top of the cure.
Do this once and every book that librarian offers becomes trivially cheap for the rest of the game. For the enchantments most worth chasing on books, see our gear enchantment guide.
