Unbound Thresh

Here is our full guide on how to play Thresh support in Season 13 highly inspired by the pro player Keria from T1.

THRESH SUPPORT GUIDE: ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

Thresh is one of the most complete champions in League of Legends. He is a versatile support pick who can fit into many different team compositions. His kit includes engaging, disengage, crowd controls, and shield, which makes him a lot of fun to play in the game.

That being said, mastering Thresh support is not easy at all and it will take some time to draw out its maximum potential. I’ve compiled the best builds and runes in our guide to help you out, taking information from my personal experience in matchmaking and one of the best Thresh players in the world, Keria.

Pros & Cons for playing Thresh:

THRESH RUNES

I favour Glacial, even though Thresh players often select either Aftershock or Guardian. In fights and skirmishes, the keystone rune performs far better at securing single targets and may be applied both offensively and defensively. I go with the following minor runes by selecting Inspiration as the main tree:

  • Hextech Flashtraption allows him to make unexpected plays and engage from unpredictable angles
  • Biscuit Delivery provides sustain in lane and helps him stay healthy and aggressive
  • Cosmic Insight reduces the cooldown of his abilities and summoner spells, allowing him to make more plays and provide more utility for his team
Thresh Runes

I recommend choosing Resolve as your secondary rune tree for Thresh, specifically with Bone Plating and Unflinching. These choices will improve Thresh’s survivability throughout the game, especially early. It’s crucial to remember that while being categorized as a tank champion, Thresh isn’t as tanky as other support champions like Nautilus or Alistar.

Pauldrons of Whiterock Pauldrons of Whiterock is a great item on Thresh as it provides him with additional armor, mana, and cooldown reduction, making him tankier and allowing him to cast his abilities more frequently. Shurelya's Battlesong Shurelya’s Battlesong is also a good item choice as it gives Thresh movement speed and ability haste, which helps him engage or disengage from fights. Ionian Boots of Lucidity Ionian Boots of Lucidity are also a great option as they provide Thresh with cooldown reduction, allowing him to cast his abilities more often. Overall, these items synergize well with Thresh’s kit and playstyle, giving him low cooldowns while making him a really dangerous support in any game.

THRESH SKILLS ORDER

THRESH TIPS AND TRICKS

Level 2 All-in: Any bot lane can benefit greatly from this. Being level 2 against level 1 practically ensures a kill or enemy Flash. The third melee minion on the second wave is where you get to level 2 bot lane (presuming you received all the exp from the first wave). To achieve the level advantage, the strategy is to assist your adc in killing these three melee minions. Thresh should begin approaching the opposing laners when the third melee minion has roughly 50% health left in order to flay or flash + flay into a death sentence. This will lead to a kill or, at least the opponent’s wasting summoner spells.

Warding:

Roaming:

Teamfighting: Throughout the entire game, team fighting as support typically stays the same. You always have to choose between peeling your carry/carries, starting fights, or both in some uncommon circumstances. As Thresh, your role is more likely to include peeling than engaging, don’t get confused. You are effectively carrying out your duties as long as you withdraw after the initial Death Sentence and avoid front lining.

FINAL THOUGHTS

In conclusion, Thresh is a versatile support champion with a lot of playmaking potential, but mastering him takes practice. It’s important to choose the right runes and build to maximize his potential, with recommended items including Pauldrons of Whiterock, Shurelya’s Battlesong, Ionian Boots of Lucidity, and Zeke’s Convergence. Utilizing the tips and tricks above such as level 2 all-ins, proper warding, and smart roaming can help improve your Thresh gameplay and hopefully win you some lp!
